Eight members of our club recently enjoyed a weekend of diving in Pembrokeshire. On Saturday 5th June we dived Rye Rocks and the Pinnacles and the following day we dived the wreck of The Lucy and High Point. With the sites being in Skomer Marine Conservation Zone – a no-take area for sea life everything we saw was on the large size. This is the only stretch of water in Wales to have such a protected status and it is managed by Natural Resources Wales.
We saw an abundance of sea creatures. There were huge scallops, lobsters, and edible crabs. You would pay a fortune for them in a restaurant although this was strictly look but don’t touch! The spider crabs were also out in force and we saw several dogfish and quite a few jellyfish. The viz was around 8m in places and the water a comfortable 12 degrees.
The light levels on the Lucy were the best we’ve seen as this can more often than not be a dark gloomy dive.
During our surface intervals we were entertained by hundreds of puffins flying around Skomer Island and a few lazy seals basking on Rye Rocks. The crew of the Overdale were very accommodating and we look forward to returning soon.
